Solar oscillation frequencies and the equation of state

Abstract

Observed oscillation frequencies of the Sun can be used to investigate the properties of matter under conditions that cannot be achieved on Earth. In particular the frequencies are sensitive to the equation of state. A recently developed treatment of the partition functions leads to a substantial improvement in the agreement between the observed and the computed frequencies.
