A supernova in the nucleus of NGC5548?

Abstract

Peterson and Ferland1 have reported observations of the low-luminosity variable Seyfert galaxy NGC5548, which they interpret as the first direct evidence for an accretion event in the nucleus of an active galaxy. Here we show that the spectrum, the timescale and the luminosity of the event may be better interpreted as the first direct evidence for a supernova explosion in the nuclear region of a spiral galaxy.
