Abstract
The drainage basins of large pristine rivers are valuable natural laboratories for the study of trace element geochemistry. Their relatively unperturbed nature provides the opportunity to establish natural concentration ranges thus giving a background against which anthropogenically impacted environments may be understood. The wide range of geological provinces present in large basins also provides an opportunity to identify the underlying geochemical parameters which determine the sources and transport of the elements in the hydrosphere.
