Tectonics and structural zonation of southern Tibet, China

Abstract

The Yarlung Zangbo suture zone is composed of several thrust sheets with distinct stratigraphies, states of deformation and metamorphic grades. Successive deformations have been produced by persistent north–south shortening since obduction of the ophiolites by late Cretaceous–Palaeocene times. A possible decoupling of the crust may be associated with the intracontinental thrust system which has formed in the subducted Indian plate. This article emphasizes the role of shear deformations in the building of a collision belt.
