Different promoters for the Anabaena glutamine synthetase gene during growth using molecular or fixed nitrogen

Abstract

The major RNA products of the cyanobacterium (blue-green alga) Anabaena glutamine synthetase (glnA) gene are transcribed from different promoters during growth utilizing molecular or fixed nitrogen. During growth utilizing ammonia the promoter sequence resembles the consensus sequence of Escherichia coli promoters; in nitrogen-fixing conditions the promoter sequence resembles those of Anabaena nitrogen-fixing (nif) genes.
