Abstract
Stable carbon isotope ratios of organic carbon from palaeosols in loess, and oxygen isotope ratios of pedogenic and lacustrine carbonates reveal significant Pleistocene climatic changes in the Kashmir basin. The extreme δ13C values of −16 and −25‰ reported here indicate a shift from arid to sub-humid conditions. The δ18O values of pedogenic carbonates is ∼2‰ higher than that of the underlying lacustrine carbonates, suggesting that they were deposited in different climatic conditions.
