Abstract
In recent years considerable circumstantial evidence has amassed to suggest that equatorial pulsating ELF hiss (100–600 Hz) is directly responsible for precipitation of the energetic electrons that produce pulsating aurora. Here we present the first evidence showing that the ELF hiss at the equator of the auroral geomagnetic field is directly related to pitch angle scattering of electrons > 22 keV into the loss cone with subsequent precipitation into the auroral atmosphere.
