Abstract
SKELETAL muscle actin can be isolated either as a globular monomer, G-actin, or as a filamentous polymer, F-actin1,2. The transition of G to F-actin is achieved by the addition of salts of monovalent or divalent cations. In the presence of higher concentrations of divalent cations F-actin filaments further aggregate into paracrystalline arrays3–6. We present here evidence for two new types of ordered actin assembly formed in the presence of trivalent lanthanide cations, which are not composed of F-actin filaments.
