Abstract
The measured dielectric properties of a range of solids and liquids, as a function of frequency, have been examined and the loss has been shown to fit a generalised empirical relationship. This includes the Cole–Cole, Fuoss–Kirk-wood, Cole–Davidson and Williams–Watts functions as particular cases and implies that a more generalised approach to the dielectric properties of materials is required than that given by the conventional distribution function extension of Debye's method, or by the dipole autocorrelation function of Williams and Watts.
