Abstract
PREHNITE and pumpellyite have been found in County Cavan, Ireland. They coexist over an area of 120 km2 and occur with combinations of quartz, calcite, albite, chlorite, epidote, phengite, sphene and celadonite in pre- and post-cleavage veins, in the matrix of Lower Palaeozoic meta-volcanic greywackes and also as amygdule fillings and phenocryst pseudomorphs in spilites inter-bedded with the greywackes. These assemblages are interpreted as having formed during low-grade metamorphism. This is apparently the first substantiated report of prehnite–pumpellyite facies regional metamorphism in the British Isles to be accompanied by complete analysis of the critical mineral pair. Until recently1,2 coexisting prehnite-pumpellyite occurrences in Britain have not been interpreted as metamorphic indicators.
