Developmental compartments in the proboscis of Drosophila

Abstract

A DEVELOPMENTAL compartment1 in Drosophila is a precisely defined region of the adult fly formed by cells of a polyclone2. A polyclone consists of all the descendents of a single group of founder cells set apart at a specific stage during development. Each thoracic appendage is formed by an anterior and posterior compartment1,3,4 which descend from nearby groups of blastoderm cells5,6. Within any part of the thorax, the boundary between these compartments does not coincide with an obvious cuticular boundary.
