Why measure astrophysical X-ray spectra? (reply)

Abstract

BROWN AND CRAIG REPLY—We do not refute the value of very high resolution spectrometry to atomic physics, nor in astrophysical abundance and line profile studies. However, grant proposals for satellite spectrometers of λ/Δλ 103 usually identify ξ(T) measurement as a primary aim (recognising that atomic line identification is harder to justify in an astronomy budget). Concerning the inference of ξ(T) we reply:
