Abstract
A realistic model of volcanic plumbing predicts that most of the established major, trace and isotopic chemical features of the common basalts could have been imposed during magma evolution in high-level magma chambers, for which process there is extensive independent field and phase equilibria evidence. These effects must be quantified before chemical features of lavas are ascribed to the nature of the underlying upper mantle.
