A method for determining the cosmological deceleration parameter q0

Abstract

THE availability of deep plates from the UK 48-inch Schmidt combined with the ability to measure the apparent magnitude of large numbers of images using the Royal Observatory Edinburgh COSMOS machine has made possible a new experiment to determine the cosmological deceleration constant q0. We have constructed a number–magnitude plot for a large sample of images and compared this with a number of simulated curves representing different values of q0.
