Detection of change in rotation measure of the Vela pulsar

Abstract

OBSERVATIONS made over the past six years show that the rotation measure of the Vela pulsar has increased by 14%, while over the same period the dispersion measure has shown a marginally significant decrease of about 0.2%. These results imply that a region containing a relatively strong magnetic field has moved across the path to the pulsar. This region of strong field is most probably associated with filamentary structure in the Vela supernova remnant.
