Abstract
An explanation is proposed for apparent superlight velocities of compact radio sources. In our model high velocities are a consequence of the interaction of the radio sources with the ambient gas in a galactic nucleus or quasar. This model predicts that the pair of sources is not centred on the nucleus and that the individual components should be smaller and more separated when observed at higher frequency.
