Fundamental research in molecular biology: relevance to medicine*

Abstract

Molecular biology has given us new insights into many phenomena of clinical importance; it has suggested new therapeutic approaches to several diseases and has provided sensitive new methods for detecting chemical carcinogens. None of these applications had been foreseen.
