Abstract
NITROGEN fixation mutants have been isolated and biochemically characterised in Azotobacter vinelandii1, but the absence of chromosomal gene transfer systems such as conjugation in this genus has prevented a genetic analysis of such mutants. We now report the intergeneric transfer of Klebsiella nif genes carried on the P-type plasmid, RP41 (refs 2 and 3), to Azotobacter, and their expression in this host.
