The fault pattern of a slow-spreading ridge near a fracture zone

Abstract

IN July, 1973 a 30,000 km2 area of the median valley and crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near 37 °N (Fig. 1) was surveyed with the long range side-scan sonar, GLORIA1. A mosaic of overlapping sonographs was produced, part of which is shown in Fig. 2, representing the view of the sea floor which would be obtained if the water were removed and the sea bed illuminated from the north-west at a Sun elevation of about 15°. On the mosaic, white areas represent relatively strong backscattering targets, and the black areas are either in shadow or are weakly backscattering sediment ponds.
