Abstract
The concept of a worldwide protein gap, derived from the diagnosis of kwashiorkor as a protein deficiency state, is no longer tenable. Current estimates of children's protein and energy requirements are considered realistic, and by these criteria the problem is mainly one of quantity rather than quality of food.
