Abstract
CONSIDERATION of exposure to drugs or other chemicals is part of the normal haematological investigation of patients with neutropenia. As there have been occasional reports concerning hair colourants and haemopoietic disorders1, we decided to investigate the long term effects of two ‘semipermanent hair colourants’ which came to our attention during routine questioning. A more extensive range of colourants (coded A–L) have been tested for mutagenic activity in bacteria. The effects of two constituent dyes have also been tested in bacteria and in human lymphocytes.
