Abstract
RIFTING and volcanic activity in Iceland is believed to be related to two active rift zones. I suggest, however, that several additional zones, some having a limited life, also exist. This concurs with a view1 that the active zones are not immutable. It is now becoming increasingly apparent, moreover, that the southern half of Iceland has a spreading rate several times greater than that of both the northern half and some submerged parts of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
