Partial nucleotide sequence of a prokaryote initiator tRNA that functions in its non-formylated form

Abstract

When grown in the absence of folate, Streptococcus faecalis initiates protein synthesis with non-formylated methionyl-tRNAfMet. The nucleotide sequence of this tRNA differs from that of tRNAfMet synthesised in the presence of folate — which functions as N-formyl-methionyl-tRNAfMet—only in the ‘GTψC’ loop, where uracil is found in the tRNAfMet of folate-free cells in place of thymine.
