Evolution of cell senescence, atherosclerosis and benign tumours

Abstract

IT has been proposed that cell senescence is the cause of organismic senescence1–3 and that senescence is under evolutionary control4. Orgel5 has argued that cell senescence could not be under evolutionary control because it is difficult to imagine how senescence of the organism has a positive evolutionary advantage.
