Abstract
A kinetic analysis of protein synthesis on ribosomes predicts that certain treatments which reduce the overall rate of polypeptide chain initiation wil inhibit translation preferentially of mRNAs with lower rate constants for polypeptide chain initiation. The effects of several inhibitors on α and β-globin synthesis by reticulocyte extracts agree with these predictions.
