Dating of the rock succession containing fossil hominids at East Rudolf, Kenya

Abstract

THE geology of the large complex faulted depression between the Ethiopian and Kenyan rifted, upwarped domes, is virtually unknown in detail. Up until 1969 there had been only a few isolated expeditions1–4 into the region, but since then there has been an increased amount of research around Lake Rudolf, particularly by Kenyan, American and French based workers4. It has been shown that the sparsely inhabited semi-desert area to the east of Lake Rudolf is exceptionally rich in the remains of fossil man, and there is abundant evidence of his activities5–28: informative hominid assemblages have been found there together with possibly the oldest known archaeological traces of hominid activity.
