Glucocorticoids and hCG sensitivity of rat testicular Leydig cell

Abstract

THERE is unequivocal evidence that the foetal Leydig cell in the rat is under the control of gonadotrophins1 whereas the postnatal Leydig cell is insensitive to hypophyseal luteinising hormone (LH) (ref. 2) as well as to exogenous human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) (refs 3 and 4). We have shown recently that the hCG insensitivity of the Leydig cell during the first 2 weeks after birth is not due to the lack of the specific hCG receptor nor of an enzyme adenyl cyclase, both of which are prerequisites of hCG action3,4 The receptor is a constitutive protein which is already present in the foetal Leydig cell5.
