Abstract
ALTHOUGH it contradicts current dogma, there is considerable indirect evidence for the idea that most antibody diversity is generated only after B cells are stimulated to proliferate by antigens or mitogens1–3. A prediction of this theory, confirmed here, is that there may be rapid production within single clones, of cells producing antibody of different specificities.
