Distribution of adenosine triphosphatase during anaphase in cricket primary spermatocytes

Abstract

THE idea that an adenosine triphosphase (ATPase) may be involved in the generation of the force that moves chromosomes comes by analogy with other motile systems1. In striated muscle, the ATPase is a part of heavy meromyosin2. It forms cross bridges with actin filaments, and is an irreducible component in the mechanochemical process3. ATPase is also present in nonmuscular systems, such as slime moulds4, myonemes5, cilia and flagella6–8, where it is essential for motility9–10.
