Kilometre and centimetre Earth strainmeters

Abstract

IT has been customary to construct strainmeters within a length range of 5–500 m (ref. 1). Prior to the instruments reported here the longest instrument was a laser strainmeter 1,020 m long2 and the shortest also a laser instrument 1 m long3.
