Serological Relationship of Swine Vesicular Disease Virus and Coxsackie B5 Virus

Abstract

THE recent outbreak of swine vesicular disease (SVD) in England1 has focused attention on the characteristics of the causative virus. The virus belongs to the enterovirus subgroup of the picornaviruses2 and the strains isolated from the first outbreak in Italy in 19662 and later in Hong Kong in 19713 and England in 19721 are serologically related. We describe here the relationship of this porcine enterovirus to a human enterovirus of man, and speculate that the virus might have been transferred from man to swine.
