Functional Preservation of Canine Heart–Lung Preparations by Perfusion with Pure Haemoglobin Solution

Abstract

THIS study deals with classic ex-vivo, self-perfusing heart–lung preparations, in which the circulating medium is a pure human haemoglobin solution free of stroma. Although this scheme was first devised for preservation for subsequent transplantation, it also provides a convenient method of testing the effects of pharmacological agents on such preparations without interference from the figured elements of the blood for periods up to 6 h.
