Abstract
FOLLOWING recent serious explosions aboard very large crude carriers (VLCC), investigations into the possible causes of such accidents have been initiated in a number of countries. Initially, interest was focused on the problems of cleaning and gas freeing of cargo tanks, especially with rotating jet washing machine systems, the electrostatic hazards of which have been reported1.
