Use of Waste Materials for Revegetation of Chromate Smelter Waste

Abstract

ALTHOUGH chromate smelting is of world-wide application, there is no reported information on the correction of substrate toxicity in residues from the industry. This has prompted Lancashire County Council to conduct investigations into techniques of revegetation of the waste in order to reclaim the derelict site of one of Britain's three principal smelters, two of which have now ceased production. The chief conclusions of this work are that the waste can be revegetated for amenity grassland by treatment with two other wastes.
