Additional Mitosis in Wheat Pollen induced by Ethrel

Abstract

ETHREL (2-chlorethylphosphonic acid) can induce male sterility in several crop plant species including cucumber1 and wheat2. This effect would have considerable economic significance if it could be used for inducing male sterile seed parents for production of F1 hybrid crop varieties. The use of Ethrel in breeding hybrid varieties cannot be assessed until the basis of its action in causing abnormal anther development is understood. Consequently we have investigated the extent and the time of induction and appearance of these abnormalities.
