Locating Protein in Membranes

Abstract

PROTEIN molecules associated with membranes presumably are the keys to the mechanisms of a number of cell functions. For two membranes it has been suggested1 that some of the protein is embedded in a lipid bilayer. I present here evidence of two kinds, covering a wide variety of natural membranes, for molecules of protein each partly inserted in a lipid bilayer and partly exposed to the aqueous medium outside. This evidence generally rules out a normal lipid bilayer with all the protein outside.
