The Visual System and “Neuronal Specificity”

Abstract

To explain how neurones make the correct connexions during development and growth, Sperry put forward his hypothesis of neuronal specificity, in which neurones are recognized by individual chemical labels. The basis for this specificity is still unclear; but recent evidence suggests that it may be more appropriate to think in terms of “systems matching” than of the matching of individual cells.
