Studies on the Biogenesis of Herpesvirus Envelope

Abstract

THE nucleocapsid of the herpesvirus is surrounded by an envelope which the virion acquires by budding from the nuclear membrane of the infected cell1–4. The viral envelope, however, contains glycoproteins which differ in their pattern of migration on acrylamide gels from those normally present in the nuclear membrane6. Proteins associated with the nuclear membrane at the time of infection do not become part of the virions, even though these proteins are not lost from the membrane after infection refs. 5–7 and (unpublished results).
