Abstract
AN early action of testosterone and chemically related steroids is to increase the sensitivity of spleen colony forming units (CFU) to the cytocidal action of high specific activity 3H-thymidine1. This can be observed as early as 6 h after a single subcutaneous injection of steroid. CFU of normal adult miec are generally insensitive to the killing action of 3H-thymidine2; hence the effect of steroids was interpreted as either triggering CFU from a resting (Go) stage into cell cycle, or shortening the cell cycle of CFU.
