Structural Changes in Myosin induced by Vitamin E Dystrophy

Abstract

THE modification of the soluble enzyme composition of muscle that takes place during development seems to be an adaptive response to changes in the functional activity of the muscle1. Similar adaptive response occurs in the myofibrillar system for the enzymatic and structural properties of myosin are characteristic of the activity pattern2–4 of the muscle from which it is derived. An apparent reversal of the normal development process occurs during some types of muscular dystrophy5 in that certain isoenzymes are found in the proportions typical of foetal tissue. The effect of this reversion on the enzymic and structural properties of myosin in dystrophy induced by vitamin E deficiency has been studied.
