Possible Upper Limit to the Distance of BL Lacertae

Abstract

BL LAC (VRO 42.22.01) is a strange source of radio, infrared and visual radiation. The radio spectrum has been investigated1 and rapid variations of radio frequency radiation have been found2–5. The continuum at visual and near infrared wavelengths has been described6,7 and the optical continuum is markedly polarized6. Rapid variations of the visual radiation on time scales as short as 1 day have recently been reported8.
