Biological Sciences: Isolation of the Cholinergic Receptor Protein of Torpedo Electric Tissue

Abstract

LEE and his co-workers have reported1–3, and we have confirmed, that α-bungarotoxin (α-BuTX), a component of the venom of a Formosan snake (Bungarus multicinctus), blocks specifically and irreversibly the depolarizing action of acetylcholine at vertebrate neuromuscular junctions. We wish to report that this toxin similarly blocks the cholinergically innervated electric tissue of Torpedo marmorata, and to describe isolation of the single membrane protein to which the toxin is bound.
