Abstract
WE wish to describe a new approach to the study of imprinting in mammals. As far as precocial mammals are concerned, only the reverse phenomenon of “maternal imprinting” on the neonatal young has been repeatedly investigated in sheep and goats1–4. Shipley5 “imprinted” guinea-pigs to a wooden block and showed this to be a gradual learning process.
