Abstract
F-PRIMES, episomes consisting of an F-factor joined to a fragment of the bacterial chromosome, arise spontaneously in Hfr males of Escherichia coli, and are easily selected because of their infective properties1. It is therefore surprising that only two such episomes have been reported from natural sources: F0-lac found in a strain of Salmonella typhosa2 and P-lac found in Proteus species from a single hospital3,4. Both of these episomes were recognized because their lactose-negative hosts had become lactose-positive (Lac+), and both are highly infective and show mutual interference with F-factors of E. coli, that is, the presence of one excludes the other.
