Abstract
AMONG photosynthetic organisms, green and purple bacteria are distinguished by their failure to evolve oxygen, a reflexion of their inability to use water as a photosynthetic electron donor. Although the mechanism of photosynthesis is grossly similar in these two groups of bacteria, its machinery is not. The photopigment systems of green and purple bacteria are group-specific; and their intracellular locations differ1,2.
