Abstract
HUMAN platelets, like most mammalian cells, take up and metabolize long-chain free fatty acids (FFA)1–3. Unbound long-chain fatty acids are known to cause platelet aggregation which is associated with the release of adenine nucleotides and serotonin4–6. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether exposure of platelets to albumin-bound FFA, in concentrations that are elevated but which can occur in physiological conditions, might affect platelet function. We have studied the influence of the FFA/albumin molar ratio (ν̄) on the response of platelets to adenosine diphosphate (ADP), a compound which may have an important role in haemostasis and thrombosis.
