Abstract
A COMPLEX of polyinosinic acid and polycytidylic acid (poly I · poly C) induces resistance to viral infections in mice1 and is an effective inducer of interferon in rabbits1,2 and mice3. This antiviral drug has been used in the treatment of herpetic keratoconjunctivitis in rabbits4, against viral tumours in mice5,6, and in clinical trials in patients with certain types of cancer7. Recent studies have indicated a high degree of toxicity for this synthetic double stranded RNA-like polymer8–11.
