Abstract
THE antiviral activity of rifampin1–7 is based solely on studies in vitro; we have therefore investigated the action of this drug in experimental animals against a series of standardized subclinical infections8 produced by both DNA and RNA viruses. Drug efficacy was also considered against the lethal infections produced in mice after the intracerebral inoculation of vaccinia and herpes simplex viruses. Of the eight infections studied, only the H-1 virus infection in hamsters showed any evidence of alteration resulting from treatment with maximally tolerated doses of rifampin8 (Table 1). We here report our positive findings in vivo.
