Abstract
BACTERIAL transformation involves several steps, beginning with the association between free DNA and the cells, and ending with alteration of the recipient genome. Although the general processes of “DNA uptake” and “integration” must be involved, the transient nature of the specific events has made their elucidation extremely difficult. Furthermore, although physiological changes occur during the development of competence, it is not known which changes are essential to transformation. We believe these processes could most readily be analysed by genetic techniques.
