Hydroxyl Stretching Frequencies in the Infrared Spectra of Anthophyllites and Gedrites

Abstract

THE infrared spectra of several orthorhombic amphibole minerals of the anthophyllite–gedrite series, (□,Na)(Mg, Fe)5Si6(Si,Al)2O22(OH,F)2, show features which bear on the accuracy of the infrared method for site population studies1,2. It has been observed that half-widths of the fundamental hydroxyl stretching frequencies vary, and that peak height is not an accurate measure of intensity. This throws some doubt on previous indications of cation clustering which were based on peak height intensity data2–4. We wish to show how the variation in half-widths may be explained by a recent refinement of the anthophyllite structure5 and to discuss errors that may be inherent in site population studies by the infrared method.
